The SMT1500 tower uses the APC RBC7 replacement battery cartridge. This is a single 12V 24Ah sealed lead-acid (VRLA) battery in a factory-wired cartridge. Hot-swappable — no tools required, no downtime.

Battery life: 3–5 years typical. Replace proactively at 3 years in environments above 25°C. The SMT1500 will display “Replace Battery” when self-test detects capacity below threshold.

SMT1500RM2U (rack-mount)? Uses RBC133 instead of RBC7. Send us your model number and we’ll confirm the right cartridge.

What battery does the APC SMT1500 use? ▼
The tower version (SMT1500) uses the APC RBC7 — a single 12V 24Ah sealed lead-acid cartridge. Hot-swappable with no tools required. The rack-mount version (SMT1500RM2U) uses RBC133 instead. Always confirm your exact model number before ordering.
How long does the SMT1500 battery last? ▼
Typical battery life is 3 to 5 years depending on ambient temperature and discharge frequency. In environments consistently above 25°C (common in server closets without dedicated cooling), expect closer to 3 years. The unit’s automatic self-test will flag a failing battery before it impacts protection.
Is the SMT1500 rack-mountable? ▼
The SMT1500 is a tower unit by default. APC offers an optional rack-mount kit to convert it for 2U rack installation. Alternatively, the SMT1500RM2U is the factory rack-mount version (uses RBC133 instead of RBC7). We quote both configurations.
Can I add a network management card for remote monitoring? ▼
Yes. The SMT1500 has an APC SmartSlot that accepts the NMC3 (AP9641) network management card. This enables SNMP monitoring, email alerts, remote shutdown, and integration with EcoStruxure IT Expert. We can quote the NMC3 card alongside the UPS.
SMT1500 vs BR1500MS — which one for a server? ▼
Always the SMT1500 for servers. The SMT provides pure sine wave output, a SmartSlot for network management cards, better power conditioning, and longer runtime options via external battery packs. The BR1500MS (Back-UPS Pro) is designed for workstations and networking gear, not servers.
