The Smart-UPS Ultra uses an integrated lithium-ion battery with a 10+ year design life — eliminating the 3-year VRLA replacement cycle. For extended runtime, add the SRTL75RMBP2U external lithium-ion battery module (1U rack-mount, daisy-chainable).

Total cost of ownership: Higher upfront cost than VRLA-based SRT, but no battery replacements for 10+ years means ~50% lower TCO over the product lifecycle. The math works out at approximately year 4 vs an SRT with its first RBC replacement.

Is the Smart-UPS Ultra worth the higher upfront cost?
For deployments you plan to keep for 5+ years, yes. The Ultra eliminates 2–3 VRLA battery replacement cycles ($500–$2,000+ per replacement on SRT models), saves 70% of rack space, and includes a 5-year warranty vs 3 years on VRLA models. The TCO breakeven typically occurs around year 4. For short-cycle deployments under 4 years, the traditional SRT is still more cost-effective.
How long does the lithium-ion battery actually last?
APC rates the Smart-UPS Ultra Li-ion battery at 10+ years design life at 25°C. Lithium-ion degrades much more slowly than VRLA — at 10 years you typically retain 70–80% of original capacity. The BMS (Battery Management System) continuously monitors cell health, temperature, and state of charge with no manual measurement required.
Can the Ultra replace my existing SRT in the same rack?
Yes — and you’ll free up significant rack space. An SRT5000 occupies 3U plus 2U per external battery pack. A 5 kVA Smart-UPS Ultra occupies 1U (plus 1U per external Li-ion module if needed). Same capacity, same online topology, fraction of the footprint. We handle the swap, re-cabling, and commissioning.
Does the Ultra work in warmer environments?
Yes. The Smart-UPS Ultra operates up to 40°C vs 35°C for VRLA-based models. Lithium-ion chemistry is inherently more temperature-tolerant than VRLA. This makes the Ultra ideal for edge deployments, retail back-rooms, and non-air-conditioned IT closets where VRLA batteries would degrade rapidly.
What maintenance does the Smart-UPS Ultra require?
Significantly less than VRLA-based UPS. The BMS handles continuous battery health monitoring — no annual impedance testing or cell-by-cell measurements needed. Recommended maintenance includes annual firmware review, visual inspection, NMC3 configuration check, and fan verification. No battery replacement for 10+ years.
