APC SMX3000 Smart-UPS X 3000VA — Extended Runtime & Battery Canada

Extended runtime — external battery expansion

APC SMX3000 —
Quote, Battery & Service Canada

The APC Smart-UPS X 3000VA (SMX3000LVNC) delivers 2700 W of pure sine-wave power with the critical advantage the SMT line lacks: external battery expansion. Add SMX48RMBP2U or SMX120BP packs to extend runtime from minutes to hours — the go-to choice for edge computing and remote sites without generator backup.

Battery for SMX3000

🔋 APC RBC143 + External Packs

The SMX3000 internal battery uses the APC RBC143 cartridge. The real advantage of the SMX platform is external battery expansion: add SMX48RMBP2U (rack, 2U each) or SMX120BP (tower) packs to multiply runtime.

Runtime with 1 external pack: ~45 minutes at half load (1350 W). With 2 packs: ~75 minutes. With 4 packs: ~2+ hours. This is the key differentiator vs the SMT3000, which cannot accept external batteries.

Sizing help: Tell us your load (watts) and target runtime, and we’ll calculate the exact number of external packs needed. No guesswork.

FAQ

SMX3000 questions

SMX3000 vs SMT3000 — what is the difference?
Same VA/W capacity (3000 VA / 2700 W), same line-interactive topology, same pure sine wave output. The critical difference: the SMX3000 accepts external battery packs (SMX48RMBP2U or SMX120BP) to extend runtime from minutes to hours. The SMT3000 cannot. If you need more than ~14 minutes of runtime at half load, the SMX3000 is the right choice.
How many external battery packs can I add?
Up to 10 SMX48RMBP2U packs (rack, 2U each). Practically, most deployments use 1–4 packs: 1 pack gives ~45 minutes at half load, 2 packs ~75 minutes, 4 packs ~2+ hours. We calculate the exact number based on your load and runtime target.
Is the SMX3000 rack-mountable?
Yes. The SMX3000 is a convertible design — ships with rack ears for 2U installation and tower feet for floor-standing. The SMX48RMBP2U external packs are also 2U each. A typical SMX3000 + 2 external packs occupies 6U of rack space.
When should I choose SMX vs SRT for extended runtime?
The SMX is line-interactive (<4 ms transfer time) and costs less than the SRT (online double-conversion, zero transfer time). For standard servers, networking, and telecom, the SMX with external batteries provides excellent protection at lower cost. For sensitive loads (medical, broadcast, precision) where any transfer time is unacceptable, the SRT is required.
What battery does the SMX3000 use internally?
The APC RBC143 — a high-rate battery cartridge specific to the Smart-UPS X platform. Hot-swappable without shutting down the load. External packs (SMX48RMBP2U) contain their own batteries and connect via the external battery connector on the rear panel.
